40 Days: Day 16

Day16: Mindfulness of Breathing Revisited

Welcome to 40 Days of Mindfulness and Compassion Day 16!

Lecture

Meditating while lying down is often not taught or given as an option by teachers. However, it is one of four classic meditation postures, and one that can provide many opportunities to practice.

Once learned, there are many opportunities to employ this practice. To me, I began to pursue this technique at the urging of a mentor, and it took a while to get it. The biggest obstacle, for me, was drowsiness and sleepiness, but the biggest benefit was that it offered an antidote to physical discomfort. It also really enhanced physical relaxation.

A key is to maintain alertness while relaxing. This is a challenge throughout meditation practice, but especially here. Our bodies are accustomed to preparing to sleep when we lie down. So, it is important to use a slightly different posture than we do when we sleep.

For me, it took many attempts before I could fight off sleepiness. But once I was able to, it became a practice that I do regularly.

I encourage everyone to explore this practice. It is one that you can take with you throughout life.

There are postural instructions in the guided meditation. The first step is to lie gently on your back and then begin listening. This is a 20 minute meditation, but you can practice in very short intervals as well.

Self-Reflective Activity

Notice when you are engaging in negative, self-critical thoughts and self- judgements;

recognize that these are just thoughts/interpretations, and practice using self-compassionate language/interpretations.
